Method

How the calculation works

PlanCalq divides the project area by the face area of one tile to estimate the minimum tile count, then rounds up to a whole tile.

Waste is added to cover cuts, breakage and layout losses. The final tile count is then converted into full boxes so the result reflects what you actually need to purchase.

Worked example

Example: 60 cm tiles on a 4 m × 6 m floor

  • Floor: 4 m × 6 m = 24 m²
  • Tile: 60 cm × 60 cm
  • Waste: 10%
  • 6 tiles per box
Planning result67 tiles cover the theoretical area, about 74 tiles are recommended with waste, and 13 six-tile boxes provide 78 tiles.

Each tile covers 0.36 m². The 24 m² floor needs 66.7 tiles before rounding. Adding 10% waste produces a planning quantity of roughly 74 tiles. Because boxes contain six tiles, the shopping quantity rounds up to 13 boxes.

Interpret the output

How to read the result

  • Use the recommended tile count to understand material need, but use boxes to place the order.
  • The difference between recommended tiles and purchased tiles is normal because the final box cannot be purchased fractionally.
  • For diagonal layouts, many corners or large-format tiles, consider testing a higher waste percentage.
Planning limits

What this calculator does not cover

  • The tool does not create a tile layout or optimise cut placement around fixtures and walls.
  • It does not account for movement joints, substrate preparation, waterproofing or structural deflection.
  • Actual box coverage and tile dimensions should always be checked against the product packaging.

Common questions

Tile Calculator FAQs

Is 10% tile waste enough?

Ten percent is a common planning allowance for straightforward layouts. Complex patterns, diagonal cuts, fragile materials or many corners may justify a higher allowance.

Why are boxes rounded up?

Retail tile is normally sold in complete boxes. The calculator therefore rounds to the next full box even if the exact tile count is slightly lower.

Can I use this for wall tile?

Yes, as long as the length and width you enter represent the wall area you want to cover.
