Deck size

Use a saved patio/deck space or enter the finished deck dimensions manually.

Deck board

Enter the face width and length of one board. Include the installation gap recommended by the board manufacturer.

Optional cost estimate

Add the price of one board to turn the quantity estimate into a material cost.

Surface-board estimate only. Framing, stairs, fascia, fasteners and manufacturer-specific installation rules are not included.

How to use the Decking Calculator

Estimate decking boards from the deck footprint, board width and spacing, then account for cuts, waste and stock length.

Step by step

What to enter

  1. Enter deck length and width or reuse a saved project area.
  2. Enter board width, the intended gap between boards and board orientation.
  3. Enter the stock length of the boards you plan to purchase.
  4. Add a waste allowance and optional price per board.
Method

How the calculation works

PlanCalq estimates how many board courses fit across the deck using board width plus the gap between boards.

It then calculates the board length required for those courses, adds waste and divides by the stock board length to estimate full boards to purchase.

Calculation summaryDeck width ÷ (board width + gap) = board coursesBoard courses × run length = total installed board lengthInstalled length × (1 + waste %) ÷ stock length = boards to buy
Common questions

Decking Calculator FAQs

Why does the gap between boards matter?

Every gap occupies part of the deck width. Across many courses, that spacing changes the number of boards needed.

Does this calculate joists or structural framing?

No. PlanCalq estimates decking boards and purchase cost only; structural deck design is outside this tool.

What waste allowance should I use?

Simple square decks can use less waste than diagonal boards, picture-frame borders, stairs or designs with many cuts.
