How to use the Mulch Calculator
Estimate how much mulch you need for beds and landscaped areas from surface dimensions and the finished mulch depth.
How the calculation works
The calculator multiplies the surface area by mulch depth to determine volume, then adds the selected allowance.
That recommended volume is converted into the bag or bulk unit you entered so you receive a practical shopping quantity.

Planning resultThe base volume is 0.90 m³; with allowance the planning quantity is about 0.99 m³.
Mulch quantity is driven by area and depth. Because depth is applied across the whole bed, even a small increase can materially change the total volume.
How to read the result
- Use bag mode for packaged mulch and bulk mode when a landscape supplier sells by cubic volume.
- Depth should represent the finished layer you actually want, not simply the height of the bagged material before settling.
- Round to the supplier’s selling unit rather than trying to purchase the exact theoretical volume.
What this calculator does not cover
- Different mulch materials settle and compact at different rates.
- Irregular beds should be split into simpler shapes for better measurement.
- Plant-specific horticultural requirements and appropriate mulch depth are outside the scope of the quantity calculation.

Can I use the calculator for an irregular garden bed?
Yes. Divide the bed into simpler rectangles, calculate each section and combine the quantities.
Why does a small increase in depth add so much mulch?
Depth is multiplied across the entire surface area, so even one extra centimetre or half-inch can add substantial volume on a large bed.
Bagged or bulk mulch?
Use whichever purchase mode matches your supplier. Large projects are often easier to estimate in bulk volume, while smaller projects may be bought in bags.
