Area to cover

Estimate mulch volume for rectangular garden beds and landscaped areas. Use a saved space above or enter dimensions manually.

How are you buying it?

Choose bags for smaller jobs or bulk volume for loose material delivered by a supplier.

Planning estimate only. Material compaction, supplier sizing and site conditions can change actual requirements.

How to use the Mulch Calculator

Estimate how much mulch you need for beds and landscaped areas from surface dimensions and the finished mulch depth.

Step by step

What to enter

  1. Enter the bed length and width or reuse saved dimensions.
  2. Enter the desired mulch depth.
  3. Choose bagged or bulk mode and enter the package size you plan to buy.
  4. Add an allowance and optional price to estimate purchase cost.
Method

How the calculation works

The calculator multiplies the surface area by mulch depth to determine volume, then adds the selected allowance.

That recommended volume is converted into the bag or bulk unit you entered so you receive a practical shopping quantity.

Calculation summaryArea × depth = mulch volumeVolume × (1 + allowance %) = recommended volumeRecommended volume ÷ package volume = bags or bulk units required
Common questions

Mulch Calculator FAQs

Can I use the calculator for an irregular garden bed?

Yes. Divide the bed into simpler rectangles, calculate each section and combine the quantities.

Why does a small increase in depth add so much mulch?

Depth is multiplied across the entire surface area, so even one extra centimetre or half-inch can add substantial volume on a large bed.

Bagged or bulk mulch?

Use whichever purchase mode matches your supplier. Large projects are often easier to estimate in bulk volume, while smaller projects may be bought in bags.
