How to use the Brick / Block Calculator

Estimate the number of bricks or blocks needed to cover a wall, including openings, waste and an optional rough mortar allowance.

What to enter

  1. Enter wall length and height or reuse relevant saved measurements.
  2. Deduct any door or window opening area.
  3. Choose a masonry-unit preset or enter the face dimensions of your brick or block.
  4. Set waste and optionally enter mortar coverage and unit price.
Method

How the calculation works

PlanCalq divides the net wall area by the visible face area of one masonry unit, then rounds up and adds your waste allowance.

The optional mortar estimate simply divides the final unit count by the coverage-per-bag value you enter. It is intentionally adjustable because mortar coverage varies widely.

Common questions

Brick / Block Calculator FAQs

Should mortar joints be included in block size?

If you know the installed modular size including the joint, use that for a closer area estimate. Otherwise keep a sensible waste allowance.

Why is mortar only a rough estimate?

Joint width, unit shape, wall thickness, mixing method and product bag yield all affect mortar consumption.

Can I calculate a load-bearing wall?

You can estimate unit quantities, but PlanCalq does not determine structural adequacy or code compliance.
